Just had to share a little vintage Harlow on the blog — and a throw back to the warmer days of fall.

womp.

A few things that I think about when seeing these photos:

  1. Rachel is ridiculous.
  2. Can you believe how quickly Harlow’s hair has grown!?
  3. I need to make LowLo some new outfits — maybe a sweater to match some of Harlow’s winter wear?
  4. I have so many photos I’m sorting through in 2013 that I never got around to sharing.  Ugh.

I might be throwing in a few “Memories of 2013” as I work on creating a yearbook of our last year — one of my goals for 2014.  Wish me luck!

I also have a very overwhelmed brain at the thought of a few things I’m going to sharing and posting soon…

  1. Patterns. Patterns and more patterns!  Knitting patterns and quilt patterns.
  2. Leather accessories for those patterns…more on that soon. ;)
  3. More tutorials!  Both sewing and knitting.
  4. A few new gluten free recipes that I’m loving.

I must like the number four today.  Oh well.

All and all, I’m really pumped to finally get these knitting patterns listed for y’all.  My heart is in the creation of new patterns and designs, and then I love seeing you create!  I will continue naming patterns after the people they are created for — so custom listings will be put back as well!

Okay.  I think that is enough that I am holding myself to for one day.

Off to fold some laundry dance to Frozen with my homegirl.  It’s so good to be home!

And now, a sweet little Harlow and her LowLo!

Two college sophomores huddled under blankets at our desks, listening to Italian and art history.  We were so cold that we took turns holding a nalgene filled with boiling water.  I wish I still had the sketch she drew of a nalgene sitting in a pot accompanied by the question, “can you boil a nalgene?”

Clearly the cold and Italian and art was taking a toll on our brain functioning.

Conveniently, she was right handed and I, left, so we shared one pair of gloves–this is what friends do when living abroad in a convent.  Then, when the hand we were writing with became too numb, we would pass the nalgene, whose water had now become luke warm, back and forth.

This memory is one that I will not forgot shortly — it is accompanied by so many ridiculous others that and I made during our time in Orvieto, Italy while we were in college.  We almost missed our flight to Frankfurt, because we were, of course, discussing our grandiose plans for our time there.  I should add–and really, this could be an entire post–we lived in a small hill city, in a convent, and we had no internet.  We truly had no idea what we were about to experience as we chatted in the Chicago airport, waiting to board our flight.

When Rachael and I first became moms, I found myself always so encouraged by her intentional ease by which she parented.  She doesn’t sweat about the small stuff, but is ernest in seeking wisdom for the big.  She is one I love going to with embarrassing stories of my mom-days, because she will laugh and then say something that makes me feel somewhat normal once again.

When her second daughter, Joan Bea, arrived I knew I wanted to make something for her.  I had seen some quilts on pinterest — this one and these ones in particular!  I had a giant scrap of the same print!

I wanted something small.  Rachael and her husband, Joe, and their daughters, Lux and Joan, live in Boston.  She walks everywhere and inspires me to get out more.  I wanted something that would be too bulky for trips to the park.

I wanted something feminine, but not frilly.  I love Rachael’s classic style and fashion forward eye.  I can always look to her for trends that are up and coming — she knows what those Europeans are scheming, I tell you.

I wanted something that looked like art.   I’ve been playing with more piecing recently, but my heart still is happiest when I just “paint” with the fabrics, mixing and matching sizes and patterns.

The leather label and the pink binding are two of my favorites aspects of the quilt — I love how it turned out.  What do you think?

I loved playing with my dolls as a child.  Store bought dolls, handmade dolls; dolls that looked like me, dolls that were the complete opposite.  I remember when the American Girl Doll magazine would come each month.  I would stare at each page, pretending that I had all of Samantha’s matching clothes and accessories.  In my mind, she came alive and off the page.  I wanted so badly to have each matching dress, so I could take her everywhere and match, of course.

Last time we were home in La Crosse, my mom showed me a she’d picked up with knitted dolls.  I might have reacted the way I first reacted when I was told we were going to IKEA — the Swedish furniture store: “who on earth would want to buy Swedish furniture?!?!”  As I rolled my eyes and dragged my feet to the car, only to never. want. to. leave upon entering it’s pearly gates yellow doors.

So when I wonder where Harlow got her drama from….I don’t need to look far.

I digress.  This doll book!  I was hooked.  These dolls are adorable, quirky, and well, I needed to make one for Harlow.  Meet, LowLo.

LowLo is the nickname that Harlow’s Aunt TeeTee gave her when she was first born.  It hasn’t been something we call Harlow, but I love it and it felt perfect for her little twin.  All of the clothing patterns in the are knit, but I haven’t tackled any of those just yet!  I’ve been totally hooked on sewing Harlow little jersey dresses, and after making this one–more on it soon–I couldn’t resist scaling it down and making a dress for LowLo.

Harlow likes to say “me matchy LowLo.”  And it’s true, they do.  From the pigtails and red hair, down to well, their I see London, I see France…..LowLo even has matching pink undies knit right on.  In the photo below, Harlow is trying hard to find them and tell us what color they are for sure.  Priorities.

Winters and I don’t get along very well.
I have always lived where winter equals cold.

Kacia + cold = not a happy Kacia.

This year, I told myself it would be different–we are in a new house, more space…all of that.
Yet somehow, the gloom has reappeared.

I think it’s partly just being ready for spring and bare feet mixed with the extreme cold temperatures and no sun.

Any tips? I’m going to start planning out our week with more activities–but all this sickness has me paranoid, I admit.
I’d love to hear any suggestions you might have!

Anyone else deal with the when-is-winter-over-blues?

My dear friend snapped these photos a few months back, and I can’t believe I haven’t shared them yet.
Harlow’s joy is contagious.

It is currently 12°F here in Pittsburgh, so these photos help me keep things in perspective a bit.
Spring is coming….spring is coming….spring is coming.

right?

Until then, we will bundle up in sweaters–I can’t wait to share a few of my favorites with you soon!–and snuggle to stay warm.
There is good to be found even in the coldest of temperatures, I am sure of it.

I am so proud of Rachel, as she was named one of the Knot’s Best Wedding Photographers for 2013! She is also returning from an incredible trip to Rwanda, and I will definitely be asking her to share some of her adventures in this space.
